Thanks for checking out Victorian Flatbush's newest blog, FlatbushVegan.com. We plan to use this blog as a place to discuss happenings in the neighborhood, highlight places we like, and occasionally give you a glimpse into the wonderful, albeit selective, vegan and vegetarian options around here. For those of you who have no interest in the vegetarian lifestyle, don't worry- we'll do our best to cover just as much neighborhood news as we will vegan issues. We'll be focusing most of our attention on the area known as Ditmas Park, but we'll also take a look at greater Flatbush and Midwood from time to time. Feel free to leave comments and suggestions and come back often!Friday, August 15, 2008

Fun! People in the hood are so obsessed with the Farm and Pomme De Whatzitcalled, which I find shockingly un-vegetarian friendly. I guess that is what makes it "fine dining", right? My local favs are the veggie burger at Picket Fence, and occasionally the little homemade ones at George's...the new Tibetian joint has been great and I'm trying to find a replacement for Veggie Castle. I've tried the one right next door, Four Seasons maybe? but not the one across the street...I'd love to see a post about our Carribean options! Thanks and good luck!
Thanks so much for the great tips! We've actually been planning to do some reviews of as many Carribean places as we can find in the vicinity. Strictly Vegetarian (the one on the same side as Veggie Castle) is pretty good and Four Seasons across the street is great, but nothing will compare to Veggie Castle. Of course, we'll go into much more detail when we do the full reviews, so check back! We haven't tried the veggie burger at Picket Fence yet. Do you know if it's vegan?
Perhaps for your banner pic it would be nice to consider taking a photo that shows, rather than a bunch of cars, the greenmarket or the weekly Community Supported Agriculture pickup or a community garden site? Something that points toward food sustainability and the ways in which our neighborhoods are beginning to contribute to, and be benefited by, regional foodways? In all my visits to the Natural Frontier market, I've never seen so many people--not to mention families with children and elders, and representing diverse backgrounds--as I've seen in a single morning at the Cortelyou greenmarket. The best vegetarian food is food that not only tastes good, but also makes Flatbush--and our nearest agricultural partners--securer, healthier, and more beautiful. Good politics can be delicious, too, and a blog like yours would be a wonderful tool for highlighting that fact.
boggle,
thanks for your suggestion. we're going to rotate the banner picture somewhat frequently. there are so many lovely and interesting scenes in the neighborhood to photograph, it would be hard to pick just one anyway. the farmers' market will definitely make an appearance.

Just wanted to clear up the Picket Fence veggie burger issue. It is not vegan. It is made with cheddar cheese. Boo.
