Meat on Marlborough

We passed by this Halal Meat delivery van unloading fresh kill at the corner deli at Newkirk and Marlborough last night. The picture quality isn't great, but basically what you're seeing is a bunch of meat just laying out in the back of the van. A plastic tarp is spread out underneath some of the meat, but it didn't look like it was protecting all of it. And nothing was stopping the meat from sliding up against the walls of the van. I guess you gotta hope that driver made no sharp turns.

Maybe we've been out of the animal flesh game for too long, but is that really the most sanitary way to transport meat?

So if you were wondering why your halal meat tastes a little more Cargo Van-y these days, well, now you know.

Um...Ewww. Funny thing is, I once stopped in to a halal meat store (actually, the meat counter in back of a deli) along Coney Is. Ave., and the meat and its surroundings looked like the cleanest I'd ever seen. Our Bangladeshi neighbor gives us fresh halal meat for Eid Al Adha; it is usually tough but flavorful, and he stresses proudly that it is extremely fresh. At least one can't make the argument that this meat is sanitized, shrink-wrapped, and divorced from its primitive sacrificial origins!

Oh wow. I'm really sad and disgusted by this. Thanks for posting this, and the photo comment. It really makes you rethink meat in general.

I'm not sure I quite get all the who hah here. What magical device should be used to transport things? There are handling requirements for meat... just as there are for corn and rice. If this van fulfills those requirements (and I wouldn't be surprised it probably does), then I don't get it.

What if a similar van was stuffed with apples? or tomatoes? or strawberries. Or does produce not rot and become the home for vermin and insects and bacteria... or perhaps it also requires sanitation.

(And the photo of the meat in the grey tub -- seriously? Are you suggesting they are using a "garbage can" to transport the meat? Seriously?!)

I'm not suggesting anything. It is was it is, this post just reminded me of that scene. This is coming from a meat eater, by the way.
